Special Snowed-In and Delayed Almost Non-Edition
Due to the weather (you did notice that it snowed, didn't ya?), this week's edition
of Discover Lansdowne has not only been delayed a day, but basically
reduced to the e-newsletter equivalent of plowed-over slush on the roadside. Yes,
much of the content below is recycled from last issue, but in case you missed it
last time, or are really, really stumped for Valentine's Day weekend
activities, take a short break from all that shoveling to catch up on
what's happening in Lansdowne.
A Candy Heart for Local Businesses
Speaking of Valentine's Day, here's a sweet thing you can do: Support the
many local businesses that have braved the rough weather to continue to
provide wonderful goods and services no matter what the conditions may be. When
winter weather keeps us closer to home, we can truly appreciate how great it
is to have shopping, entertainment, and other services all within walking
distance. Remember, gift certificates are the perfect way to say thanks to that kind person who helped you shovel.
From Snowballs to Softball
Due to the recent storm, the Lansdowne Boys and Girls Club has
updated the schedule for Saturday's Baseball/Softball events. Baseball and
Softball Registrations will
be accepted from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the LBGC Clubhouse at 7
West Baltimore Ave. There is ample parking in the lot across the street at 10
West Baltimore. The Mandatory Girls Softball Parents Meeting
at 2:00 pm will also take place at the LBGC Clubhouse. If
your child is playing softball this season, it is very important that you
attend this meeting to help ensure that year's softball program is a
success. If you have any questions, please call 610.623.8031.
Even More Romantic Stuff
The Lansdowne
Symphony Orchestra's annual Valentine's Concert takes
place this year on VD proper and is a great opportunity to
sit in the dark and hold hands with your special someone. The
performance is at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 14 (duh), at the Upper
Darby Performing Arts Center and
includes works by, among others, Mendelssohn and Sibelius. And as of this writing, there's still a chance to make your reservations
for one of Sycamore's two Valentine's Day prix fixe dinner
seatings (5 or 8 pm), featuring a special
menu and live music by Minas. Call 484-461-2867 soon to make a reservation!
Still a couple weeks away, on Saturday, February 27, Cinema 16:9 moviegoers will be treated to a one-time-only reading by local
author Sue
Lange of material taken from her 2009 collection of
critically praised sci-fi short stories, Uncategorized. Lange's
reading will be preceded, followed, and sometimes accompanied by
guitar and vocal music performed by Gary M. Celima. This unique
event is sure to fill up, so, again, reservations are the way to
go: 484-461-7676. Tickets are $20 for the author reading and music
plus the movie (which is to be determined), $15 for just the
reading and music, or $7 for the movie alone. All proceeds will
benefit Cinema 16:9. (You can download "Jump," the lead story in Uncategorized, for free here.)
Local Hoops Update
We hyped them up in the last Discover Lansdowne and they haven't lost a game since then, so we're going to do our part to keep their good fortune going by wishing good luck to the Penn Wood Patriots boys varsity basketball team as they seek to repeat as state AAAA champions. The schedule for upcoming games -- boys, girls, and all teams -- can be found here, so get out and support them at an upcoming game.
Pet Events Continue at Library
Love Your Pet Month continues at the Lansdowne
Public Library with Friday evening
screenings of 101 Dalmatians and Bambi on February
19 and 26, respectively; and an up-close-and-personal
meeting with Ferret Man Dale Nupp and the pets that give
him his nickname on February 28. (More details on all
these events, including times, can be found here.)
It's also still not too late for kids 12 and under to submit
a one-page essay titled "Why I Love My Pet" to Rachee
Fagg, the children's librarian at the Lansdowne Public Library.
(The deadline is next Friday, February 19, so there's even time to adopt
a pet if your child doesn't already have one!) Prizes will
be awarded, and the winning entry will be published in the Animal
Friends of Lansdowne newsletter.

Applications for the 2010 Lansdowne Farmers Market season are now available here. If
you've inquired about or been considering applying for a booth at our
Farmers Market to sell your homemade product, now is the time to let us know. Just complete and return the form, and if the Market needs your product
and there's space, we'll go from there. Again, we make no promises, but if
you're interested, application is the first step.
This has been the scene nearly everywhere in Lansdowne lately.
