Just Say Snow
The cruel, cruel irony of Canada's having to make, truck in,
and fake snow for the Winter Olympics while we dig out repeatedly
down here is not lost on anyone with an aching back and a folding
chair saving their parking space. (Did you know that at one point
last week, there was snow somewhere in every state except
Hawaii?) And no sooner do we have a melt than the weather
maps get menacingly white again. Even with our fingers in
our ears, singing, "Lalalalalalala. We can't hear you,
weatherman. Lalalalalala," it's hard to miss what's being
predicted for the next few days. So this is (yet) another weekend
to keep it close to home and take advantage of the many things
our little borough has to offer entertainment-wise. Most of
what's going on has gotten a little press here a time or two
before, so you should already have your tickets and the time
blocked out. In case not, here's our final try at selling you
on these local events.
(Please note that all snowmen built henceforth this winter
are considered abominable.)
Multimedia
Saturday night, February 27, offers another double (triple?) bill
of sorts, this one at Cinema 16:9, with a 7:00 pm
reading by a local author accompanied by live music and followed by
a movie. Author
Sue
Lange will be reading from her recent short story
collection, Uncategorized, and her friend Gary M. Celima will
sing and play guitar. (Perhaps this is a good place to remind you that
the Cinema has gone BYO, so you can easily amp up the art house vibe
of this event with some wine or other spirits.) Then stick around for
the Romanian film
Police,
Adjective, which won a couple of awards at Cannes and which
has a compelling and amusing
trailer. Tickets
are $15 for just the reading and music, $20 for the reading and music plus
the movie, or $7 for the movie alone. All proceeds benefit Cinema 16:9,
35 N. Lansdowne Avenue, Lansdowne. Call 484-461-7676 for reservations.
(By the way, if you missed A Town Called Panic at 16:9, kick
yourself a couple of times then get some folks together and rent it.
It's madcap claymation that's genuinely fun for all ages, even if
some ages can't even read the subtitles.)
AAAAdvancing
Hope we're not wearing you out with the high school
basketball updates, but if you are ever going to jump on the
HS b-ball bandwagon, now is the time. The Penn Wood
Patriots boys varsity basketball team won a
squeaker
Tuesday evening to advance to Round 3 in their attempt to
become PIAA AAAA district champions (last year they were
second in the districts but first in the state). Down by
10 with two minutes to go on Tuesday, they scored 11 unanswered
points. Now that's rising to the occasion, people. There
are eight teams still vying for the district title, and the
Patriots play Neshaminy tomorrow night, February 26, at 7:30 pm
at West Chester East High School, 450 Ellis Lane, West Chester.
Happiness is a Wiggly Ferret
Love Your Pet Month concludes at the Lansdowne Public Library Sunday,
February 28, when Ferret Man Dale Nupp brings some of
his favorite animals to the library and talks about the care, feeding, and
appeal of these funny, furry characters between 1:30 and 3:30 pm. No
children under 8 years of age, please. 55 S. Lansdowne Avenue, Lansdowne;
610-623-0239.
(Please note that tomorrow night's showing of Bambi at the
library has been cancelled.)
Show Us Your Wares
The Lansdowne Arts and Crafts Show is coming up sooner
than you'd expect. The event is 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 1,
and applications are due by April 15; get yours
here. This
is the one that's held in the Farmers Market parking lot.
