When making your produce picks at Fruitwood Farms, don’t forget the honey, honey. More than a delicious sub for cane sugar, honey has health benefits that have been known since our ancestors walked upright.
In other words, forever. In fact, word is that’s what Wilma smeared on Fred’s feet after a long drive. The sticky stuff may have lost some glamor to the Age of Big Pharma, but today honey is undergoing a resurgence as a go-to natural cure for everything from a cough to cuts, burns and scrapes. No prescription needed. Just a stroll to the produce tent.
For the top of the line as healing honeys go, you need to travel to the Land Down Under to where Manuka and Kanuka trees grow; but you shouldn’t overlook the buzz in your own backyard about what our local honey can do for you. Especially dark buckwheat honey. BTW: despite the name, there is no wheat in buckwheat. So gluten is not a factor. Buckwheat or Manuka? Although the Australian varieties get all the glory, American honey has plenty to recommend it. There are even findings that show our local stuff to be superior in certain situations. In fact, ingesting a honey gathered from a local hive may offset allergies related to local flora. But don’t wait until you’re suffering to try it; this stuff is seriously deelish. Try it draped all over vanilla ice cream. You’re welcome.
There’s a reason for the phrase “busy as a bee” so next time you see one, thank her. And once more I’ll recommend a great beach read: The Bees by Laline Paul.
Giving the honey a run for its money, Ridge Valley Farm knows a thing or two about sweet and sticky. Good and good for you, too! From pancakes to cookies to sweet and salty snacks, maple syrup is all that. Even if New England grabs most of the publicity, Ridge Valley Maple syrup is produced just a quick hop north of us, in Green Lane PA, 18054.
In fact, all the world’s maple syrup is produced exclusively in Canada and the U.S…so backatcha, Australia!
In the Artist’s Tent: Crafty Quillers. How does she do it? I’m getting paper cuts just looking at her site! Stop by and be amazed!
