Even though much has changed, this 2023 season has seen a return of some of the energy and fun of our pre-Covid years.
And it was definitely worth the three-year wait for the return of Doggie Day at the Lansdowne Farmers Market; it was just how we remembered it. Funny, chaotic and oh so sweet. Our thanks to Animal Friends of Lansdowne for their participation and organizing skills. They didn’t have to herd cats, exactly, but still…anything can happen on Doggie Day. We even had a pair of humans come disguised as pups. They didn’t make it to the qualifying round, but still… Thanks to Mayor Byrne for stepping up to the emcee spot. You can view photos of all of the finalists, or at least the ones who agreed to pose, on the LFM FB page.
NOTE: in response to when the Cavalcade of Cats is scheduled…we’ll get back to you on that.
Also a round of apaws to Lansdowne’s own trained K9 patrol force, Chapek and Bogie, two four-legged smarties who put Officers Miller and McGowan through their paces. Well done!
Meanwhile, mutt mayhem on the Landing notwithstanding, on the vendor side of the midway, it was business as usual; at the produce stands, still a week or three to grab a bit of summer flavor with sweet peaches, which thanks to the excessive heat this year have grown to monster size. Be sure not to squeeze the peach, but a day or two on your window ledge is all that’s needed to bring out every drop of nectar. Melons and corn will be here for another few weeks… but like a gentle tap on the shoulder, plums have joined the party, and pears… …and it’s getting harder and harder to ignore those green- to rosy-skinned apples. Or maybe it’s time to take that bite. Stay tuned.
Be sure to stop by your favorite Auntie’s tent…Aunt Verlea will be there with your dose of pound cake. And if you can snag a leg or three from Tucquan Hollow, and a bit of produce to go with…we call that winner winner chicken dinner!
On to other matters…like Seven weeks to the LFM BAKE-OFF!
…and time for a little history lesson. I suppose cooks have been besting one another ever since the invention of hot rocks and fire; and lord only knows how many marriages can trace their roots back to a perfect pie crust…but things never went viral until 1949, when the Pillsbury Baking Company put up a cool $50K, and the Pillsbury BakeOff was born.
And in 2023 that pudgy little dough boy is still cookin’ with gas! Today, winners can come from every corner of the culinary crafts…from casseroles to cookies, from Aspic to Zucchini. Once…and only once…a healthy option actually made it to the winner’s circle. That would be 1976’s Whole Wheat Raisin Loaf! You’ll have to look that one up yourself. I can’t even…
Winners have come from big cities and small towns, like Christina Verrelli of Devon PA who jumped on the pumpkin spice train in 2012 to create her pumpkin ravioli with salted caramel whipped cream. For the record, I jumped off that train at “salted caramel,” which should never appear in the same sentence as ravioli. End of discussion.
In the Music Tent: Easy listenin’ country sounds of Kathy Quinn and Julieanne Ott
As ever…be sure to read the entire Lansdowne Link. I can’t be held responsible for you missing out on some of the opportunities and events happening in town. And if you really want to be in the know…be a volunteer! If you don’t know how to get started, start at our Market Manager tent…we can help hook you up.
Bowwow for now,
Terry B.
