“The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer… like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning.”―Natalie Babbitt (Tuck Everlasting)
If you just felt a tap on your shoulder…don’t turn around. It’s only August telling you to look sharp and don’t miss the best part of summer. Lazy days and nights that are longer and cooler and perfect for taking time to do some stargazing; and for making time to gather up those remaining rosebuds…or that basket of peaches, a couple dozen ears of local corn to shuck and freeze, a pound or two of green beans, and at least one kind of melon. Now’s the actual minute to finally try that blackberry pie recipe you’ve had stuck to the fridge.
But all isn’t lost…pears have arrived…tender creamy Bartletts are first up, but please, look, don’t touch. They bruise easier than a lover’s heart. Nerd fact: Pears are related to those rosebuds mentioned earlier, and in ancient Greece were considered gifts of the gods. So show a little respect.
And plums…First the sweet little sugar babies that come and go almost before you can say sugar babies. So don’t wait for me to tell ya.
Before you know it, apples have crashed the party at the produce stands, the breeze has a hint of cool, and the wheel picks up its pace. I’m never ready for it. We’ll discuss how to successfully transition at a later date…when I’m ready.
In the meantime, enjoy every last minute of summer…the season of less clothing and more ice cream.
