Breaking News: LFM Goes to the Dogs

Oh Yeah!  Doggie Day is here!  And if all goes according to tradition, this week’s LFM will be just about the funnest and most raucous of the season.  Brought to you by Animal Friends of Lansdowne.

You should know that Lansdowners love their pets… furred, feathered and finned.  And we would love to show them all off.  But, dog-gone it all, have you ever tried getting a cat or a parakeet to sit on command?  Wear a costume? Talk about barking up the wrong tree! (and yep, I’ve got more where that came from).

Seriously, this is a not-to-be-missed event, even if you are not now or never were a dog owner…if only to realize how the entrant owners (and quite possibly your neighbors) sincerely believe that their Fido is earmarked for Hollywood Boulevard…or more likely, the Yellow Brick Road, if you get my drift.

There are comparisons to be drawn with the more famous Westminster Dog Show…if “anything but” counts as one.  Prestige has no place here…nor do fancy hyphen-riddled names or mile-long pedigrees. But have you ever seen a Westminster Westie show up in a clown suit?  Or a Superman cape? That kind of entertainment you can only get at Lansdowne Farmers Market…and it’s all free, folks!   And just like Westminster, breeding will out and our pooches run the gamut.  Will you be rooting for the cutest? trickiest? smartest? Will it be the friskiest scene stealer or the ultra laid-back, wake-me-when-it’s-my-turn…wait for it…BARK-a lounger?   C’mon…you didn’t expect me to leave that one on the table, didja?  Truce!

IMPORTANT ENTRY INFO:

  • Owners may enter 2 dogs.
  • The pageant will start promptly at 11:30. We will accept registration forms up until 11:15, along with the $1 registration fee.
  • All proceeds go to Animal Friends of Lansdowne
  • Here is the registration form, or come to the Market early enough to fill one out.

Meanwhile…back at the booths…

As the produce tables and pumpkins will bear out, we’ve officially moved into autumn.

Apples of every ilk…Galas and Honeycrisps, bright Jonagolds and ruby Red Delicious.  Pears are in but you gotta pay attention. Their season is short, and they ripen rather rapidly (say that three time fast)…so put them where you’ll remember to eat them.  Cool weather will also bring round two of cauliflower and turnips, to go with the beets and carrots and onions for that hearty soup you’ve been thinking on….don’t forget the bread to go with!

As always, check your shopping list against the vendor schedule on our LFM website or FB page.

In the Music Tent: Doc Terry and Auld String Theory.

Eclectic is how they choose to describe themselves…but let’s call it what it is:  seriously unstaid, pure listening fun!  Message to toes: get ready to tap.

Artist of the Week: To Just Bee Jewelry and Things.  One-of-a-kind jewelry…maybe a pair of skull earrings to get you in the mood for ghosts, goblins and candy corn.

Which brings me to another important date for your calendars:

Oct. 27: Our Fall Fest signals the last regular Market day of the season.  So you know we’ll go out of our way to keep you wanting more. Be there for…

  • Our last Community Day: the last one was amazing.  My favorite: Honey on the comb from right around the corner!  We have some pretty interesting peeps here in Lansdowne, and Community Day is a great chance to show us what you got!
  • Lansdowne Borough Halloween Party and Parade!  Calling all kids from 0 to 10. The must-see parade will begin at the Market and end with a party and prizes at the Twentieth Century Club.   NOTE: all adults must be accompanied by a kid…and vice-versa.

Finally, as we head into October, I guess it’s time to put away those whites and haul out the sweaters and sensible shoes. My soul, and my soles, rebel.

See you at the LFM!

Terry Baraldi
