Just one more week until we ring the curtain down on the 2019 LFM season. I’m gonna miss it…time spent with friends, time to just sit and people-watch…time to be a part of something uniquely Lansdowne; although time for sleeping in on a Saturday does have its charm!
But we still have a mile or two to go before we sleep…so let’s make the most of it.
There’s still time to discover a new food, or new ways to prepare old favorites (or the ones we hated as kids!). Like discovering that a turnip or brussel sprout roasted is a whole different animal from Mom’s boiled standby.
As with all root veggies, roasting with just a light coating of oil and quick tip of the salt shaker coaxes out the sugars hiding inside. For bonus points throw in a few sprigs of sage or rosemary, or dust with nutmeg, cinnamon or ginger. And be prepared for second helpings!
Now that we’ve had our fill of summery tomato salads and sandwiches, there’s nothing like a chilly autumn night to put one in the mood for a slurpy bowl of something to warm body and soul! It’s the season for soups and stews…aka “comfort foods.” Make your own “from scratch”* from the piles of fresh ingredients now appearing at LFM produce tables… or take home a couple of quarts of sump’n sump’n ready-made and delicious from Wilson’s Curiously Good Foods.
* Nerd Alert: Didja know… that the term “from scratch” actually originated in the sports world, where the starting line or base line was scratched into the ground. It only began to apply to economical cooking after WWII, as more costly boxed mixes or prepared foods became available. Today “making it from scratch” is considered a point of pride.
In the Music Tent: Simon James /Rita Miller. Making our day just a little bit sweeter with acoustic guitars and vocals.
Artists of the Week: It’s a twofer! Maura Williams Photography…who doesn’t love her beautiful photo notecards? and Megan Halsey Art. Can’t help but smile at her clever and colorful designs. Get a jump on your Holiday shopping lists!
Home & Body: Kiss My Soul Naturals Sara Burns’ soaps, scrubs and soy candles will keep your body feeling soft and your abode smelling sweet.
And the days dwindle down, but not without a fuss…there’s still lots of fun to be had.
F’rinstance…Make sure all the 10-and-unders in your house get costumed up for Lansdowne’s Annual Halloween Parade. Our LFM vendors will be prepared for early trick-or-treaters, but the real action begins at 12:45 on the Landing side, as Mayor Tony and his imps lead the parade down to the Twentieth Century Club. All adults MUST be accompanied by children!
Watch this space for even more things to look forward to as the season winds down…The Harvest 5K will happen on Saturday, Nov. 2, and Yours Truly will be waiting at the halfway point to give you your pace, and a dose of encouragement. But you won’t see me if you don’t sign up! So what are you waiting for?
See you there.
