If you’ve been paying attention, we are down to our last three markets of the regular LFM season…In old movies, this is the part where the pages fly off the calendar, right?
If nothing else, the drop in temperature last Saturday was a gentle tap on the shoulder…bright, brisk and bea-u-tiful. October at its very best.
Even with a few lingering baskets of peaches, corn and melon, we couldn’t miss the message…Fall is here, and winter is coming.
If you listened closely, you could zone in on conversations about the best apples for applesauce and pies…or the inner mysteries of spaghetti squash…or how to roast a butternut. Turnips and sweet potatoes, beets and onions, cabbage and carrots are all waiting to hurl themselves into soups, stews and roasting pans for your gastronomic delight.
In the Fall, seasonings morph from summery cool mint and basil to warm and earthy sage and nutmeg. (BTW: sage makes a most excellent pesto for pork or butternut risottos.) Mmmmm…I feel warmer just typing that!
Of course, the star of every October is the pumpkin…sure. But have you seen them lately? We’re not talkin’ just your big round and orange jack-o-lantern. Noooo. Pumpkins and their squash cousins now come in fashion shades from hot orange to cool blues and ghostly whites, and in shapes round, squat or curvy, smooth or bumpy. They’re come-as-they-are ready to decorate your doorstep…and subsequently be presented, roasted or pureed, to your waiting dinner party guests.
So even if you’ve never…take a chance on some of those shapely squash.
You can see all of this week’s vendors by visiting the LFM site, but I want to give some special attention to what we hope will become a regular and welcome addition to the lineup: Cantrip Coffee Roasters of …tadah!… Lansdowne, PA! The smell of fresh brewed coffee has always reminded me of morning walks in OCNJ (no, I don’t know why), so if Derek sees me setting up a beach chair in his driveway, I hope he’ll understand.
Also, for those of you who plan ahead…Sebastian of Creative Shepherd will make one last scheduled visit to the LFM on Oct. 26. Plan accordingly.
In the Music Tent: This is a BIGGIE! The LSO String Quartet will lend some high-tone vibes to our more casual proceedings. In case you haven’t heard, our own Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra recently won a prestigious national award for its cd American Romantics III. Wishing them a wonderful upcoming season…and I’ll save you a seat!
Artist of the Week: William’s World. William Brewer first came to the LFM about three or four years ago. This young artist has turned his autism into a gift of creativity and reflection of how he sees the world around him. He and his work are beautiful.
