From First to Last

First a word: Lansdowne, a pretty little town, all kinds of people there that’ll show you around…

In case you missed last week’s market, those words were written and sung by musician Lisa Jeanette, who met and married her love right here in the Village. Give it a listen here…Lansdowne. I think that rates an extra plug, don’t you? Thank you, Lisa Jeanette.

…and now, back to the Market…

It’s almost like we can’t believe it’ll happen, but we turn around and May has morphed into October. Sundresses and shades have been replaced with sweaters and scarves, sandals into sensible shoes with bottoms and tops. Peaches to pumpkins…

Yes, PUMPKINS! And as promised, here is the last word on the topic. While most of us think of that round orange ball primarily as decor, there are ways to actually eat the darn things. This year, instead of opening a can, why not try opening an actual straight-from-the-patch pumpkin?

Pumpkin guts is actually good eats, people!  Sweet or savory, butters to broth, purees to puddings…or maybe a fancy pumpkin risotto? It’s all in there. Drinks? I mean besides the over-promoted pumpkin spice latte, coffee or beer…how about a pumpkin brew a la Harry Potter? All is takes is your time and a sharp knife to get started. Ready, set, go here.

But time for that after we wrap up the final weekly Lansdowne Farmers Market of 2018. It’s time to stock up on the last of the harvest…fruits to bake in a bread or fresh-freeze for pies and smoothies; veggies to plop into a winter stew or turn into jars and jars of pickles. But don’t YOU be a veggie! When the frost is on the windshield, it’s all too easy to just pull that afghan back up over your head and hibernate. Don’t do it! Because just as important as food is friendship, so make plans now to get together over the dark of winter (maybe over a slice of pumpkin bread?) with people you care about.

This week is the last Community Day, and the Landing side will be packed with local organizations, entrepreneurs and hobbyists who would just love to show you what they’ve been up to. Always a surprise.

And of course, we’ll be awash in ghouls, gremlins and superheroes…and sheroes… in advance of the Lansdowne Borough Kids’ Halloween Parade. At 12:45 (which is the local witching hour) costumed kids 10 years and under will line up at the Landing, where Mayor cum Marshall Tony will lead them to a spooktacular party at the Twentieth Century Club.

And even if you’re waaaay beyond 10, who says you can’t show up in costume? A market buck to the first 10 to show up at the Manager’s tent.

In the Music Tent: Last Chance with Jack Scott and Ingrid Rosenback…a folk-fusion duo, with lots of down-home strings and vocals.

Artist of the Week: Photography by Lansdowne’s own Maura Williams, with her photo notecards of just about everything under the sun. Buy singly or in themed packs. Stock up and stay in touch.

Which brings us to Last: another season folded up with the tents…and your LFM volunteers will gratefully grab a couple extra hours of Saturday shut eye.

BUT NOT FOR LONG…

Just because the market is closed doesn’t mean we roll up the sidewalks. There’s stuff to do right up ’thru November.

  • November 17 Bonus Market just in time to grab those gotta-haves for your Thanksgiving feast.   All of the vendors are invited to join us for this annual postscript to the season. Come by and buy!
  • And don’t forget that we will hold abbreviated winter markets every third Saturday, 10 am to noon from December thru April.

And still more!

  • 3: The gun goes off at 8:30am for the LEDC 5K Harvest Run. If you’re not running, come be a cheerleader. If you are running, yours truly will be waiting for you at the halfway point.
  • Nov 23: A Bit of the Arts opens at the Twentieth Century Club. Friday from 4 to 8pm;
  • Nov 24: Shop Small Business Saturday. Utility Works Holiday Pop-Up Shop opens it doors at 10:00 am; and just a short stroll away A Bit of the Arts continues from 10 am to 4:00 pm. Then home to get the kiddos and head back to the Avenue for the Holiday Tree Lighting. Look for specials and coupons at the local businesses that day as well.

One more time…see you there!
