Produce on Parade

This Saturday, July 3, there’s more than one reason to be up on the Avenue…

Get up there early and grab your favorite spot to cheer the return of Lansdowne’s 4th of JULY parade …then march on down to the center of town to the day’s real fancy brigade…

…because what could be fancier or more parade-worthy than a produce table (or two…or three!) loaded with the real symbols of summer…ripe ’n ready to enjoy.  Comin’ in hot are the peaches and blueberries, tart baking cherries and maybe even the first melons… better hurry if you want to snag any late great strawberries for that shortcake.   No promises. Of course, if you’d rather not turn on the oven, Tom at My House Cookies may have an already-baked solution for the sweet teeth at your table.

On the savory side, have you SEEN the tomatoes at Greenhorn Gardens?  Or the salad fixins’ and green leafy things at Fruitwood?  And yes, Mitch and Green Zebra are back with those gorgeous heirlooms.  I’ve even spied some early redskins…and really, is there anything more Fourth of July than potato salad?   Except maybe that first bite of corn on the cob!  Seriously, July is our reward for surviving winter.

Speaking of potato salad…instead of the usual mayo, try tossing with some of Takay’s Fresh Herb Dressing for a creamy new twist on that old favorite.  Do you taste the basil? Or the cilantro?  Perfect together.

To see who or what all is going to be on parade at the market this week, you can visit our LFM website or our Facebook page.

On that note, we realize that, due to COVID and staffing shortages, there have been some empty spaces along the midway, and we have shared your disappointment.  BUT THAT IS CHANGING!  So, if y’all did the necessary finger-and-toe-crossing, the BIG SKY BREAD oven is now up and cookin’, and they plan to be back at the LFM this week!  So keep ‘em crossed ’til you get there.

Also look for some soul-healing (and who doesn’t need some of that this year?) body treats from Love, Naturally and scent-ual candles from Cozy by JChanel.  Go on…you’ve earned it.

The ARTIST TENT reopens this week with Paper Maché by Rachel, turning paper and paste into whimsy.   And we are planning our first 2021 LFM Community Day for the last Saturday of this month.  So, skedaddle on outta here, COVID 19…and take your masks with you!*

*As of the end of June, PA has lifted the mask mandate.  So masks are no longer required at the farmers market! Of course, that does NOT mean that you lose all sense of caution.  Please use common sense and discretion if you are not fully vaccinated or around young children who are not yet eligible for shots.  We want everyone here this year to be around next year.

Book report: Got a vacation planned?  Need some good beach reads?  Let me help with some food/nature-related, off-trend books that may actually make you think…but not too hard.

  • Barbara Kingsolver’s  Animal, Vegetable, Miracle…
  • Laline Paul’s The Bees (an exposé from inside the hive)
  • Ray Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine (if you’re anywhere over age 50 this is the one.)

Got a favorite you’d like to recommend?  Tell me.

So…right this minute, go dig out your best red, white and blues… and get ready to ring in a new and better 2021…because this year, more than ever, it’s time to

Live, Love, Lansdowne!

Terry Baraldi
