There’s no stopping the clock, or the calendar. Just when we thought the weather was stuck on August, it’s actually half past October, and the chill is finally in the air. Which means that we’re just about at the end of another season of the Lansdowne Farmers Market.
But we’re not leaving quite yet…not while there’s still some Fresh Picks on parade at the produce stalls. Like apples. Maybe some snappy HoneyCrisp apples to eat out of hand, or bake into a warm, gooey cobbler? MmmmHmmm! Is it just me, or did your mouth just water? Maybe pounce onto some pears before they disappear…pear tarts are the bomb! Or try a tangy pear chutney to serve with pork or poultry, or to top a creamy round of chèvre.
But let’s face it…the stars of the October LFM are the winter veggies…beets and turnips that roast up like candy…and potatoes and parsnips and cabbages that conjure up chilly nights with a cauldron of soup. A brew of a stew! Don’t forget the bread!…Lordy, the bread! Even our go-to spices change with the seasons; Simon and Garfunkel didn’t make it up, ya know… ”parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme” is a real thing!
I know, I know… you’re waiting for the next installment of Project Pumpkin! This week, class, we’re going to talk about how to keep that grinning Jack from morphing into a moldy mess before Halloween. We’ve all been there! So…what are you going for this year? One giant head or a gaggle of ghouls? Smiley or scary? Art nouveaux or classic grin? Whichever you choose, there are ways to keep your monster masterpiece from melting like a Salvador Dali clock. (go on…look it up.) Follow these tips and you can keep scaring the mailman right up to Thanksgiving! Next week…Good Eats.
And speaking of Thanksgiving, don’t forget to stop by your favorite LFM vendor to place an order for your holiday hosting. Order now and pick it up at our big pre-Turkey Day BONUS Market on Nov. 17!
Looks like Creative Shepherd will be here this week, and I’ll bet with more than just cheese; there’s always something unexpected at Sebastian’s table.
Red Brick Craft Distillery will be here with some potables to enjoy before, during and after any feast…or just for sipping by a cozy fire.
Kiss My Soul Naturals…time to stock up on Sara’s candles to keep the winter drearies at bay…and maybe some natural rubs and scrubs to winterize that skin.
In the Music Tent: This week is a two-fer with Bob Fournier & Lisa Jeanette sharing time under the tent, playing acoustic guitar and singing songs with a message.
Artist of the Week: Grace Caputo is a familiar face around the Market, but she is also known in these parts for her bangles and beads. Type O(-) Jewelry is mostly silver, mostly organic and mostly just what you were looking for. But she can also get downright kooky-creative at Halloween-time. So no telling what’ll pop-up at this week’s pop-up…so, pop in!
Vote Lansdowne will be on hand to answer questions regarding ballot and precinct information to get everyone pumped and primed for the polls on November 6. VOTE!
