OK…that’s a wrap on Labor Day! …Summer exits stage left, and cue the apples and everything orange and yellow to line up! Get the kids’ saddle shoes OUTTA the closet and all your white clothes INTO it. Szkreeetzh! Wait! WHAT????
I’ve just been informed that the kids nowadays think that “saddle shoes” are something worn by horses; and that it also appears that people are still walking’ around in their WHITES!
Whaaaat? I have officially lived too long.
The whole wear/don’t wear white thing became de rigueur back in the “before” times…when what you wore told the whole world who you were…and wearing white said millions…literally. Then somewhere around 1970, etiquette maven Amy Vanderbilt decreed that the rule was always sorta silly…but now it officially no longer applied.
So…go on…if it feels good, wear it…now, next month, next winter.
NOTE: Just don’t wear it to a wedding…unless it’s your own. Brides still own that whole thing.
But here we are…however we are dressed…facing another turn of the planet…and feeling that ever-so-subtle shift in the ether. And we resurrect those flannel shirts and sweaters, pull on those lace-up shoes, and start to crave …yes…pumpkin spice! Bwahahaha!
And just a quick browse along the produce tent, you start to accept that apples belong there now. That pears come in yellow, green and brown. That root vegetables hint at tummy-warming soups and stews. Oh, you still have time for some last of the season berries and peaches to get into the freezer, and corn for just a blink longer. You can freeze that too.
Or…you can follow my rule: To everything it’s season…and that means the calendar starts now, counting down to next June, and that first peach, or corn, or melon, of 2025.
In the meantime…it’s apples and grapes and pears. Oh my!
Now that I think (hope) we’ve seen the last of the 90° degree days, it’s time to get reacquainted with your oven…maybe bake up some of those summer fruits into cakes or pies or for the advanced among us, fire up the burners for jams and jellies. But for the luvva!…be careful when cooking those sugars down. Did you know that melted sugar is so hot that it can actually burn a tiny crater into that glass-top stove? Without going into detail…I do now!
Last week was a very well-attended Community Day, with some of our local community and civic minded neighbors to remind us that we are more than what we eat. We are the ones who plant trees and gardens, and read good books, and do all the things that citizens do to keep moving life forward…And that includes VOTING! No matter what side of any issue, it’s important to use that ballot box to state your case. The non-partisan Lansdowne Votes table handed out a survey asking for votes on some of the issues of the day. Visit their FaceBook page to see the results. And visit their LansdowneVotes.com website for important and updated info on topics and candidates from both sides of the aisle.
We are still waiting for a “go” date re the coming redesign of our Landing. So in the meantime, life continues apace, and…
In the Music Tent : while last week we all mellowed out to Dave Falcone and the classics, this weekend, if the weather gods will allow, we can bone up on our classical credswith the Lansdowne String Quartet.
Don’t forget… after you’ve finished reading here…don’t forget to go back and read the rest of the LEDC newsletter. It’s full of stuff to sign up for and make the most of Maker Space and Utility Works.
See you Saturday
